De Beque trustees to discuss data center moratorium after developer expresses interest
De Beque trustees are scheduled to discuss a temporary moratorium on data center applications after the town received interest from an unidentified developer. A staff memo cited potential impacts on the local power grid, water resources, noise and light pollution, and recommended developing regulations before considering applications.
De Beque officials are preparing to discuss a temporary moratorium on data center applications at the town’s Oct. 27 Board of Trustees meeting. A staff memo said the town had received interest from an unidentified developer seeking to build within De Beque, but no formal application was pending.
The memo urged caution, citing potential strain on electricity and water infrastructure, along with industrial noise and light pollution. It said trustees could direct staff to draft a moratorium while the town develops data center regulations, while also noting legal complexities if an application is filed before any moratorium takes effect. Grand Junction and Mesa County have recently adopted their own moratoriums, while Fruita has begun considering one.
