The town of Clyde, North Carolina, is holding a public hearing on a proposed year-long moratorium for data center and crypto mining facilities. This action follows a similar moratorium enacted in nearby Canton due to public concerns over energy use and noise from such developments. Clyde's proactive measure aims to allow time for crafting appropriate zoning regulations.

The town of Clyde, North Carolina, has scheduled a public hearing for April 16 at 4 p.m. at Clyde Town Hall to discuss a potential moratorium on data center and crypto mining facilities. Town Administrator Joy Garland stated that while Clyde has not yet received inquiries from developers, the hearing is a proactive step, influenced by strong public sentiment in the neighboring town of Canton.
Canton recently held a highly attended public hearing on February 11, where more than 100 residents, with 44 speaking against data center development, expressed concerns. Following this, the Canton town board unanimously voted to impose a year-long moratorium on data centers, crypto mining facilities, and server farms, citing high energy consumption and noise complaints. This period is intended to allow Canton to develop specific zoning laws and ordinances to regulate future developments.
Clyde's proposed moratorium aims to provide a similar timeframe for the town to establish its own regulatory framework before any potential data center projects emerge, learning from Canton's experience.
