Conneaut, Ohio, Residents Seek Data Center Moratorium After Council Rejection

Residents of Conneaut, Ohio, are actively fighting to prevent the development of data centers in their small northeast Ohio town, despite official uncertainty about whether a project is actually planned. The Conneaut City Council recently rejected a data center moratorium, prompting residents to launch a ballot initiative for a moratorium to be voted on in November.

Concerns among residents like Joel Specht and Julia Barton center on the potential loss of farmland, heavy water and electricity usage (facilities needing more than 25 megawatts), increased noise, and the erosion of the town's rural character. Some residents, including Victoria and Jonathan Dampf, reported receiving offers of up to $2 million for their land from developers. M2 Development Solutions has been studying the feasibility of a data center at the Conneaut East Industrial Park since last year.

Opponents also expressed worries about transparency, citing developers' use of non-disclosure agreements. Specht and other residents have held demonstrations and spoken at city council meetings, viewing the moratorium as a proactive measure to halt development before it becomes difficult to stop.

While the majority of public comments have opposed data centers, at least one resident, Tim Krause, expressed gratitude that the council rejected the moratorium, fearing it would deter other industrial development and economic growth for the region.
