
ERCOT forecasts energy demand to double in six years

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) forecasts a near doubling of the state's energy demand by 2032, projecting approximately 175,000 megawatts, a significant increase from last week's record of 91,308 megawatts. This surge is primarily attributed to a massive influx of data centers, coupled with Texas's growing population and expanding economy, ERCOT CEO Pablo Vegas informed the state's Senate Business and Commerce Committee.
Despite breaking demand records, the grid successfully met demand due to substantial growth in solar power and battery storage, which now contributes significantly to the state's energy supply. Thomas Gleeson, chair of the Public Utility Commission of Texas, expressed confidence in the grid's current capability but stressed the necessity for more natural gas generation to ensure stability when solar production declines at night.
Following the 2021 Winter Storm Uri, the Legislature enacted laws to fortify power generators against extreme weather and mandated that data centers disconnect from the grid during periods of strain. Additionally, the state created the $10 billion Texas Energy Fund in 2023 to offer low-interest loans for developing new natural gas power plants, with several projects already approved or under review by the PUC. Regulators are also revamping their energy demand forecasting system, acknowledging that previous models struggled to account for the rapid growth of large loads like data centers.
