Iowa Advocacy Group Counters Data Center Misinformation Amid Local Debates and Moratoriums
A new advocacy group called "Growing Iowa's Economy," comprising 30 organizations, has formed in Iowa to counter what it terms misinformation about data center projects. The group aims to educate Iowans on the economic benefits, including jobs and taxes, as communities like Johnson County debate data center developments, with unincorporated parts of Johnson County currently under a moratorium.
A new advocacy group, "Growing Iowa's Economy," has been established in Iowa with the aim of ensuring Iowans are fully informed about future data center projects, including their economic impact. The coalition, which consists of 30 unions, chambers of commerce, and companies across the state, seeks to counter what it perceives as misinformation surrounding data center developments.
Brian Tabick of KCRG-TV9 reported that a leader from "Growing Iowa's Economy" stated the group is focused on presenting facts, not fear, regarding data centers. The group highlights benefits such as job creation and tax revenue that data centers can bring to local communities, and addresses concerns about impacts like water usage.
This initiative comes as various communities across Eastern Iowa, including city councils, supervisors, and local boards, have been engaged in discussions regarding the potential construction of data centers. Greater Iowa City is also forming a similar local group in Johnson County, involving local community members. Currently, unincorporated areas of Johnson County are operating under a moratorium on data center development until November.
