Families living in the Texas Research Park neighborhood in far west Bexar County, Texas, have reported a strong rotten egg smell originating from the nearby Vantage Data Center. Residents, including Sarah Forsyth, moved to the area for fresh air but instead experienced odors so intense that the neighborhood's HOA representative, Stewart Pennington, stated they caused violent nausea, especially near the playground and pool.
Residents expressed frustration over the lack of communication, stating they received no notice or heads-up about the facility's construction. After Pennington reached out, Vantage Data Center explained that a setup error led to an excessive injection of a chemical designed to give natural gas its odor. A company vice president acknowledged the facility uses natural gas infrastructure but claimed to be unaware of any incident posing a risk to the community. Forsyth emphasized the need for better communication from the company to the community.
