Takanock is proposing the $4.5 billion Project Tallmadge data center campus in Strasburg, supported by a natural gas turbine plant and backup generators. A review of company filings and public records found that the turbines are intended primarily for backup power, with limited potential electricity sales to the regional grid, while the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality reviews the air permit.

Takanock is planning a $4.5 billion data center campus in Strasburg’s industrial park. The company’s air permit application describes a natural gas turbine plant capable of supplying as much as 389 megawatts to the regional transmission system, while town planning director Brian Otis said the turbines would primarily provide backup power for the data centers and could supply the grid on a limited basis during periods of high demand.

The Northern Virginia Daily’s review of permit filings, land records and town documents found differing figures for the project’s acreage, computing load and generation capacity, leaving some questions unresolved. Strasburg officials certified that the proposed use was consistent with local zoning and suitable for the area, but said that certification did not constitute approval of the project’s technical air-permit application. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality has begun reviewing the permit, with a public comment period and a target decision date in 2027.
