Jerseyville crypto data center draws crowd to board meeting
An unusually large crowd attended a Jersey County Board meeting to oppose Something New LLC's proposed 18-megawatt cryptocurrency data center south of Jerseyville. The County Board took no action, and the project has not yet received a permit, though officials said it could be approved if it meets county requirements.
About 50 people attended the Jersey County Board meeting in Jerseyville, Illinois, where roughly a dozen speakers voiced opposition to Something New LLC's proposed 18-megawatt modular cryptocurrency data center. The project, known as the Delhi Project, would occupy seven acres of land owned by MJM Electric Cooperative near 28860 Van Horne Lane in unincorporated Mississippi Township, south of Jerseyville.
The County Board took no action because the proposal was not on the meeting agenda. Board Chairman Mark Wagner said the company has submitted a commercial building permit application but has not yet formally requested or received a permit. Residents raised concerns about potential effects on electricity and water costs, community character, farmland and the county's lack of zoning, while county officials said the site plan met stormwater requirements.
