AI, data center companies employees donate over $100K to Blackburn campaign
New campaign finance reports reveal that employees of AI and data center companies, specifically Anthropic and Oracle, have donated over $100,000 to Senator Marsha Blackburn's gubernatorial campaign in Tennessee. These donations occur as Oracle moves forward with a campus in Nashville and Blackburn expresses support for data center development. Blackburn's opponents did not receive similar donations from these companies.
Campaign finance reports for Tennessee's gubernatorial race indicate that Senator Marsha Blackburn's campaign received more than $100,000 in donations from employees of artificial intelligence and data center companies, including Anthropic and Oracle. Specifically, Anthropic employees contributed $53,000 within days of each other, and Oracle employees, alongside its chairman, donated over $50,000. Many of these donors reportedly reside outside of Tennessee.
These significant contributions come as Oracle advances its campus development in Nashville. Senator Blackburn has publicly championed data centers as a crucial component of Tennessee's economic growth, advocating for thoughtful placement. When approached for comment, Blackburn's campaign characterized itself as a "grassroots campaign" with over 62,000 contributions and asserted that Blackburn has led efforts to "hold big tech accountable.
Political analysts suggest that while money may not directly buy votes, it can influence political favorability. The reports also showed that Blackburn's Republican opponents, Congressman John Rose and State Representative Monty Fritts, did not receive comparable donations from employees of Oracle or Anthropic.
