Joplin area residents rally against proposed data centers

Joplin, Missouri residents, organized by the "Joplin Citizens Against Wildwood Ranch Data Center," held a rally outside Joplin City Hall to protest proposed data center projects in the Four States area, particularly a development planned for Wildwood Ranch. The rally, which gathered approximately 50 people, coincided with May Day and emphasized the working class's concerns about the impact of these projects. K.J. McDonald, a rally organizer, stated that the group plans to continue fighting the projects and push for city-imposed protections and regulations if development proceeds. Resident Robb Jones highlighted the importance of community engagement to ensure Joplin remains a desirable place to live for working families. In response to the opposition, Joplin Mayor Rob O'Brian issued a statement confirming that city staff are currently researching data center ordinances from other communities to develop stronger guidelines. He indicated that the City Council anticipates reviewing these proposals, with any ordinance adoption occurring at a public meeting to allow for community input. The Mayor also noted that the Wildwood Ranch site is already zoned for heavy industry, which requires substantial developer studies before any building permits are issued.
