It aims to address the growing demand for skilled workers in the construction industry due to the surge in data center development.
Mark Zuckerberg's Meta has announced the launch of "America's Workforce Academy," a free training program aimed at equipping Americans with the skilled trades necessary for constructing the company's expanding network of data centers across the United States. Developed in partnership with commercial real estate firm CBRE and the Associated Builders and Contractors trade group, the initiative guarantees job placement at a Meta data center construction site upon successful completion.
Meta has allocated $115 million to fund the program this year, with pilot initiatives rolling out in Louisiana, Ohio, Indiana, and Texas. Dina Powell McCormick, Meta's President and Vice-Chairman, emphasized the program's role in securing American strength in the new age of AI by addressing the increasing demand for skilled workers, particularly electricians and HVAC technicians, crucial for building advanced data center facilities.
The construction industry faces a significant labor shortage, with an estimated 349,000 new workers needed this year, driven largely by the surge in data center construction. Mike Rowe, CEO of the mikeroweWORKS Foundation, commended Meta's approach, highlighting its model of paid learning, zero cost to participants, and guaranteed job offers as an important step toward closing America's skills gap.
