The impact of data centers on the environment
The article examines the potential environmental effects of expanding AI data centers, including electricity consumption, carbon emissions, heat, land use and water demand. Experts discussing the issue say rural communities should weigh economic benefits against long-term impacts on local infrastructure and natural resources, including groundwater in Cape Girardeau.
As artificial intelligence data center proposals expand into rural areas, communities are being urged to consider both economic benefits and environmental costs. Southeast Missouri State University environmental science director John Kraemer said data centers can create jobs, construction activity and tax revenue, but may also increase electricity demand, fossil-fuel emissions, heat and long-term land-use concerns.
Water use was a particular focus, as facilities may rely on municipal systems or groundwater for cooling. Cape Girardeau currently draws drinking water from groundwater wells, raising questions about infrastructure capacity and competition for finite resources if a data center were proposed locally. SEMO REDI CEO Shad Burner said newer closed-loop cooling systems may reduce daily water demand compared with earlier technologies, while Kraemer urged communities to assess impacts over five- and 10-year periods.
