The U.S. Department of Energy and Department of Commerce have announced a significant public-private partnership with SoftBank and AEP Ohio to develop a massive energy and AI project in southern Ohio. The initiative involves redeveloping federal land at the Portsmouth Site in Pike County. As part of the project, SB Energy, a SoftBank Group company, plans to construct 10 gigawatts of new power generation, primarily natural gas-fueled, to support a new 10-gigawatt data center. This data center is designed to meet the increasing demand for computing power driven by artificial intelligence and advanced technologies. The project is backed by $33.3 billion in Japanese funding, linked to a broader U.S.-Japan trade and investment agreement. The partnership also includes a $4.2 billion investment in transmission infrastructure upgrades across southern Ohio, which officials state will improve grid reliability and lower electricity prices without increasing costs for ratepayers. AEP Ohio Chairman, President, and CEO Bill Fehrman expressed pride in bringing critical infrastructure to Appalachian Ohio. U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright highlighted the project's role in strengthening the energy system and supporting the AI boom. Additionally, the initiative includes environmental cleanup efforts at the Portsmouth site and is expected to create thousands of jobs, foster workforce development, and stimulate economic growth in the region. Construction is anticipated to begin later this year.
