Council certifies 2-yr moratorium on data centers
Mount Pleasant Town Council unanimously approved a two-year moratorium on large-scale data centers requiring more than 1 megawatt of power or significant town water resources. The pause will allow officials to review zoning rules, while excluding Mount Pleasant Waterworks' small solar-powered data facility.
Mount Pleasant Town Council voted unanimously to impose a two-year moratorium on primary-use data centers, extending the proposed pause from one year. The moratorium responds to concerns about potential water and electricity consumption and applies to large facilities requiring substantial town infrastructure, rather than smaller ancillary operations.
Town Attorney David G. Pagliarini said the town will review zoning districts and permitted uses, with staff expected to bring potential changes to the planning commission. Council members said the moratorium could end early if the zoning revisions are completed, and officials noted that no hyperscale data center is currently seeking to locate in Mount Pleasant.
