The proposal, initially turned down by the Planning and Zoning commission, is expected to be resubmitted by the developer. Bohmfalk emphasized the non-negotiable requirement for mandatory water and energy consumption disclosure from data center operators. She asserted that such transparency is vital for the city government, advisory committees, and residents to accurately assess whether large-scale projects offer a net benefit to Lubbock, especially concerning long-term impacts on infrastructure, utilities, and quality of life. Regarding claims by LEDA's CEO about significant tax revenue from the project, Bohmfalk called for clear, itemized numbers and a break-even analysis. She questioned whether projected revenues would sufficiently offset long-term costs related to infrastructure, water supply, energy demand, environmental impact, and surrounding neighborhoods. Given Lubbock’s current fiscal and water constraints, Bohmfalk stated she is not convinced an AI hyperscale data center is an appropriate fit for the city at this time. She also addressed city budget constraints, public safety staffing, and the use of Hotel Occupancy Tax funds, advocating for smarter growth policies and the reinstatement of impact fees to avoid financial decline.
