Public comment period opens for proposed Amazon data center in Wallula
Walla Walla County has opened a 30-day public comment period for Amazon's proposed Attalia Data Center Campus in Wallula. The project includes three data center buildings and supporting infrastructure on a 134-acre parcel. Various county and state permits, including environmental clearances, are required for the development.
Walla Walla County Community Development Director Melissa Shumake announced that Amazon Data Services, Inc. has filed an application for the Amazon Attalia Data Center Campus in Wallula, Washington. The formal notice of application initiates a 30-day public comment period, allowing residents to submit written feedback until October 12.
The proposed campus, located on a 134-acre parcel along Sundance Road, east of U.S. Route 12, includes three 220,000-square-foot data center buildings, an industrial water facility, and a security building. The site plan also details storage tanks, ponds, septic systems, access roads, and a future electrical substation. Amazon acquired the land from the Port of Walla Walla in March.
Beyond county land-use, building, and grading approvals, the project requires environmental, air quality, fuel storage, and wastewater permits from the Washington Department of Ecology, as well as clearances from federal wildlife and state historic preservation agencies. Following the initial comment period, the Community Development Department will make a State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) threshold determination, which will be followed by a second comment period. The director's final decision can be appealed to the Walla Walla County Hearing Examiner.
The application was initially filed on May 22 and deemed substantially complete by the county on August 24.
