Stak Energy, an Alaska-based AI energy infrastructure start-up, has proposed a three-gigawatt modular data center spanning 715 acres on Alaska's North Slope. This project stands in stark contrast to the 'green' marketing of Nscale's Arctic data centers in Norway, as Stak Energy's facility would rely entirely on fossil fuels, powered by natural gas from a pipeline extending from local petroleum fields. Furthermore, Nscale, a British hyperscaler, is concurrently constructing a fossil-fuel-dependent data center in West Virginia, despite promoting sustainable operations elsewhere.
This proposed development has ignited strong opposition from Native Movement, a grassroots advocacy organization. The group raised urgent concerns during the public comment period, which closed on June 15, 2026, highlighting potential long-term impacts on permafrost melt, caribou migration, and water contamination. Native Movement also disputes claims of significant job creation, noting that the project, located 21 miles from the Iñupiat community of Utqiagvik, would generate at most 60 jobs unlikely to benefit local populations. The organization warns that tech companies often target rural Indigenous communities, leading to critical impacts on ecosystems and local resources.
