Beal Infrastructure, a California-based developer, has withdrawn its plans for Project Atlas, a controversial data center proposed for an area just south of Coweta, Oklahoma. The project, initially slated to begin construction in 2026, faced widespread community opposition, with residents packing Coweta Planning Commission meetings and displaying signs against the development. Concerns voiced by residents included potential air and noise pollution, impacts on property values, higher taxes, and the data center's significant water and electricity consumption. Ultimately, the rezoning request necessary for the project to proceed was denied. While Beal Infrastructure did not provide specific reasons for its withdrawal, the company stated its commitment to other investments in Oklahoma. City of Coweta officials, who had anticipated a significant annual boost to the community from the data center, expressed disappointment but affirmed their focus on finding new opportunities for the city's growth. City Manager Julie Casteen indicated that the decision does not affect future plans for the city.
