Texas House lawmakers are currently investigating the rapid expansion of data centers and their potential impact on the state's electricity grid. During a recent interim hearing, Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) President & CEO Pablo Vegas testified before the House State Affairs Committee, revealing that data centers account for nearly 87% of over 410,000 megawatts of proposed large-load projects awaiting connection to the grid.
Vegas highlighted deficiencies in the existing approval process and put forth a proposal for a new "batch" system. This system would aim to more effectively manage and reserve transmission capacity for projects anticipated to become operational between 2027 and 2030. Industry representatives also contributed to the hearing, acknowledging the economic benefits data centers bring, but underscoring the necessity for more transparent regulations to safeguard grid reliability and benefit local communities.
