Paris Marx, host of the "Tech Won't Save Us" podcast and author of "Hyperscale," discussed the potential for other states to follow New York's lead, noting that 15 states are currently considering similar measures. While some bills have been vetoed or failed, many are still moving through legislatures. Marx acknowledged that data centers bring construction jobs and potential tax revenues, but pointed out that these companies often seek aggressive tax breaks, diminishing local benefits.
Regarding the suggestion that companies pay for their own resource usage, Marx believes it might address some issues but not all. He cited the example of xAI in Memphis, Tennessee, and its on-again, off-again promise to build a water treatment facility. Marx also highlighted increased electricity prices in many states due to data center demand, as well as noise pollution from cooling units and local air pollution from natural gas power plants often built alongside these facilities.
