Leon County commissioners propose 1-year moratorium on data center projects
Leon County commissioners are considering a one-year moratorium on data center projects. This proposal aims to allow the county to assess the long-term implications of such developments and ensure proper infrastructure is in place. Commissioners plan to add the moratorium as an agenda item for their next meeting, with the county attorney investigating legal requirements.
Leon County commissioners are moving to temporarily halt data center developments, proposing a one-year moratorium on new projects. During a recent Tuesday meeting, the board discussed the need to understand the long-term impacts of these industrial uses and to prepare infrastructure before making further land use decisions.
Commission Chair Christian Caban issued a letter before the meeting, highlighting the rapid advancement of AI technologies and the subsequent pressure on local governments to make swift utility and land use decisions for an evolving industry. He emphasized the importance of having adequate infrastructure in place before data center conversations even begin, noting that such projects have faced considerable public pushback locally and nationwide. Caban stated, "This issue is extremely unpopular with taxpayers and voters, and I believe that we owe it to them to make sure that we are gathering all necessary information."
Other Florida counties, including Jackson and Citrus, have already enacted data center moratoriums. The Leon County commissioners have agreed to include the proposed moratorium as an agenda item for their upcoming meeting and have directed the county attorney to research the legal requirements for its implementation.
