Lawmaker unveils bills to curb unchecked data center growth in Pennsylvania

State Rep. Jamie Walsh (R-Luzerne) this week unveiled a legislative package intended to rein in the rapid expansion of large data centers in Luzerne County and statewide, saying residents and local officials need stronger protections as the industry grows. Walsh told reporters the arrival of several companies seeking sites in his district — attracted by available land and nearby infrastructure — has raised alarm among neighbors worried about the projects’ effects on utilities, farmland and local services. He said data centers consume substantial amounts of electricity and water, prompting questions about whether Pennsylvania’s existing systems can meet future demand without driving up costs for residential customers.
