Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen has established a Data Center Task Force, appointing 17 leaders from utility, business, labor, and local government sectors to study the potential impacts of data center development across the state. Authorized by Executive Order 26-17 and overseen by the Nebraska Department of Water, Environment and Energy, the task force is charged with evaluating effects on water resources, the electrical grid, and local infrastructure, as well as considering necessary zoning guidelines and policy frameworks for managing future growth.
Governor Pillen emphasized the rapidly expanding nature of the data center industry while stressing the importance of protecting Nebraska's natural resources and energy systems. The task force members, drawing expertise from energy, construction, water management, economic development, and local government, include prominent figures such as Lincoln Electric System CEO Emeka Anyanwu, Omaha Public Power District CEO Javier Fernandez, Nebraska Public Power District President and CEO Tom Kent, and executives from companies like Berkshire Hathaway Energy, Tenaska, Kiewit Infrastructure Group, and HDR.
The administration expects the task force to hold its inaugural meeting in September. Governor Pillen has recently highlighted the need for safeguards concerning data center development, particularly regarding utility customers and energy resources, with the task force's work aimed at helping state and county officials balance development with resource preservation.
