Meta enters agreement with Mason County for data center
Meta plans to build a hyperscale data center on more than 2,000 acres in Mason County, with an initial investment of $10 billion and a potential 40-year buildout valued at $800 billion. The Mason County Fiscal Court approved a development agreement covering tax incentives, water and road improvements, power infrastructure, and community benefits, while opponents have raised concerns and filed lawsuits challenging the county's process.
Meta has been identified as the developer behind a planned hyperscale data center campus of more than 2,000 acres in Mason County near Maysville. The Mason County Fiscal Court approved a development agreement with Meta, through its project entity Crisham LLC, involving an initial $10 billion investment and a five-phase expansion that could reach $800 billion over 40 years. The county previously rezoned the site from agricultural to rural industrial.
Meta would fund major infrastructure improvements, including $115 million or more for water and roads, power lines and substations, and a $15 million public safety impact fee. The project is expected to create at least 100 permanent jobs initially and thousands of construction jobs, while generating substantial payments to Mason County government and schools in lieu of property taxes. County Judge-Executive Owen McNeill supports the project, but the community group We Are Mason County, KY, opposes it, and lawsuits have been filed challenging the county's handling of the process. The project remains contingent on approval of incentives by the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority board.
