The City of Marshall, Michigan, is actively reviewing and updating its municipal noise regulations in preparation for the Marshall Technology & Energy Center, a large-scale development by Alterra Group. This project, featuring both a data center and a natural gas generation plant, is slated for construction on land within the Brooks Industrial Park, which was acquired for $1.12 million and is already zoned for heavy industrial use, bypassing a public ballot.
Concerns about noise pollution from the data center's cooling fans and the power plant's generators have prompted city officials to draft numerous ordinances. Marshall Mayor Scott Wolfersberger emphasized that any new noise standards would apply city-wide and aim to close gaps in existing zoning laws to align industrial operations with community standards, particularly given the site's proximity to residential areas and the Brooks Nature Area. Alterra Group is conducting due diligence until late 2026, while the Marshall City Council plans to vote on the final noise ordinance following a public meeting on Monday, May 18, 2026, urging community input.
