SpaceXAI building fifth Mid-South data center
SpaceXAI is constructing its fifth data center in Southaven, Mississippi, on the former site of the Southaven Police and Fire Training Center. Residents, like Lana Nelson, are vocal about persistent noise and air quality issues stemming from the existing SpaceXAI power plant, a concern echoed by Alderman Charlie Hoots who voted against the project's design. SpaceXAI is expanding its presence in the Mid-South region with plans to build its fifth data center, this one located in Southaven, Mississippi. The new facility will be situated on the former site of the Southaven Police and Fire Training Center, adding to the company's existing data centers in Southaven and Southwest Memphis, Tennessee.
The expansion has drawn significant concern from local residents regarding environmental impacts. Lana Nelson, who lives near an existing SpaceXAI power plant in Southaven, described the constant noise as "unbearable" and impacting her ability to work outdoors due to air quality issues and migraines. She noted that the noise, which she likened to aircraft engines starting up, has progressively worsened.
Alderman Charlie Hoots was the sole member of the board to vote against the project's design, acknowledging the potential benefits for the city but stressing the need for the company to fulfill its commitments regarding noise mitigation. Hoots stated that his constituents are still suffering from noise from temporary turbines, despite ongoing extensions for their replacement. Mayor Darren Muselwhite addressed the concerns, indicating that SpaceXAI has engaged acoustic engineers to address and further reduce the noise issues. Despite these efforts, neighbors continue to worry about future expansions in other parts of the city.
