Iowa communities call for greater data center transparency and local control
The opinion article argues that Iowa communities need greater transparency and local control over data center development. It cites concerns about water use, electricity demand, utility costs, noise and light pollution, including the QTS data center under construction near Fairfax, and notes that a proposed transparency bill failed to advance while numerous Iowa counties and cities enacted moratoriums.
The Gazette opinion piece argues that Iowa state leaders are disregarding residents’ concerns about the rapid expansion of data centers. Conservation advocate Jessica Mazour points to potential water consumption, electricity demand, utility infrastructure costs, noise and nighttime lighting, citing the QTS data center under construction near Fairfax as an example of the changes communities may face.
The article says Rep. Cindy Golding’s House File 2690, which would have required greater transparency about data center water and electricity use, failed to advance beyond committee. It also says at least 21 Iowa counties and numerous cities have adopted moratoriums on new data center proposals to allow time for planning and public input, and calls for state leaders to preserve local control.
