Supervisors approve moratorium on data centers

The Adair County Board of Supervisors in Iowa recently approved a temporary moratorium on the construction of data centers, high-density computing facilities, and battery storage facilities within the county's unincorporated areas. The decision was spearheaded by Supervisor Jodie Hoadley, who expressed concerns regarding the significant electricity and water demands of such facilities and their potential impact on local residents. Hoadley emphasized the importance of passing the moratorium to allow county officials sufficient time to study these developments, seek legal opinions, and potentially establish permanent regulations. The resolution cited the board's desire to ensure safe construction and operation, protect nearby property owners, and safeguard county roads. Board Chairman Jerry Walker, however, voiced a concern that the moratorium might deter new businesses and hinder economic growth and job creation in Adair County. Hoadley countered that the moratorium ensures the county can address concerns before projects become too far along, protecting taxpayers' interests.
