The town of Bristol, Indiana, has approved the annexation of nearly 500 acres of new farmland, a decision that has ignited considerable anxiety and opposition among local residents. A large crowd packed Bristol Town Hall, where nearly every speaker during two hours of public comment voiced their objections to the annexation, bringing signs that read “say no to annexation”.
Community members' primary concern is that the annexed land, situated off County Road 19, could become a site for data center development. Residents expressed worries about potential environmental impacts, increased water usage, and declining property values. Although rezoning for data centers was not on Thursday's agenda, the fear of future development was a central theme of the opposition.
Bristol Town Council President Jeff Beachy addressed these concerns by stating that the annexation would allow town officials more control over future decisions, citing examples like implementing noise ordinances, dark sky lighting, and earth barriers. Despite this, one neighbor, identified as Thomas, indicated plans to explore legal action to ensure the land remains zoned for agricultural uses, suggesting ongoing efforts to prevent data center construction.
