Data center developments in Illinois are encountering growing pushback from communities concerned about their environmental and economic effects. While proponents highlight construction jobs and economic investment, critics point to limited long-term employment and significant demands on local infrastructure.

In central Illinois, a proposed data center in Sangamon County, which received approval from the Sangamon County Board in April following months of public meetings and local opposition, is now facing a lawsuit. The cities of Waverly and Virden filed the suit, challenging the county's approval process and arguing that the project's negative impacts on the surrounding area were not adequately demonstrated.

Concurrently, another data center project in Logan County, proposed by developer Hut 8, is still undergoing review. Hut 8 resubmitted its conditional use permit and project application in late June after experiencing earlier delays in the approval process. These developments unfold as the national debate over large-scale data centers intensifies, highlighted by New York's recent enactment of a statewide moratorium on new data center construction.
