On July 29, the Loudon County Commission unanimously approved a six-month moratorium on the construction of data centers within Loudon County, Tennessee. The decision, met with applause, followed extensive local and statewide discussions and debates. Citizens at the commission meeting voiced significant concerns, citing environmental impacts, high water and electricity consumption, noise pollution, and the potential threat of AI to the job market.

Commissioner Van Shaver expressed a desire to ban data centers outright and indicated the county plans to use the moratorium period to assess state regulations and the upcoming gubernatorial election's influence on data center policy. The county also intends to rework its zoning policies to deter future data center development. The moratorium can be extended for an additional six months by the Loudon County Planning Commission and Loudon County Commission in January.
