Inside Arizona's data center boom: What the numbers reveal
Arizona has 182 data centers, including 107 under construction and 53 planned, with development concentrated around the Phoenix metro area. The projects are expected to add substantial economic activity and jobs but could require more power than Arizona currently uses, raising concerns about grid capacity.
Arizona has become a major U.S. data center market, with 182 facilities statewide and an estimated 49 gigawatts of electricity demand from existing, planned and proposed projects. The report says 107 data centers are under construction and 53 more are planned, with much of the development occurring in the West Valley near Goodyear and Buckeye.
Projects and campuses associated with NTT, Apple, EdgeConneX, Microsoft and Stream Data Centers are contributing to the region's expansion. The Greater Phoenix Economic Council credits the broader technology growth with 108,000 jobs and $11 billion in economic impact, while the scale of planned development raises questions about how Arizona will meet the industry's power needs.
