DataOne AI Data Center in Vineland Faces Fine Over Unpermitted Generators
DataOne's planned AI data center in Vineland operated a fleet of unpermitted gas-powered generators for nearly a year, prompting New Jersey to impose a fine of more than $1 million. The facility continues using the generators while seeking permits and contesting the state enforcement action, amid community concerns about pollution and noise.
DataOne’s planned AI data center in Vineland, New Jersey, has drawn criticism over noise, unpermitted construction and a contentious zoning process. A thermal-drone investigation by Floodlight revealed a fleet of gas-powered generators that had operated for nearly a year without permits. New Jersey fined the company more than $1 million after determining the generators could emit substantial air pollution.
Residents, including Tiffany Leone-Vespa, expressed concern about potential exposure to emissions. Ed Potosnak, a commissioner with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, declined to answer questions about why the generators were allowed to operate without permits. DataOne continues to use the generators while working toward a permanent fuel-cell power system and has requested a hearing to contest the fine, arguing that the generators do not require permits. Under the state’s enforcement order, the company must apply for permits or stop operating the generators by Nov. 6.
