Palm Beach County commissioners vote to freeze zoning for AI data centers
Palm Beach County commissioners have voted to enact an immediate moratorium on all AI data centers and freeze all related zoning. This action prevents new applicants while staff draft a formal ordinance to establish new parameters for data center development. The controversial Project Tango is excluded and will face a vote next week.
Palm Beach County commissioners have moved to immediately halt new AI data center developments within the county by approving a moratorium and freezing all related zoning applications. Mayor Sarah Baxter emphasized that this measure will prevent new applicants from proceeding until the county can establish new parameters and finalize a comprehensive ordinance.
The commission passed two distinct motions during their meeting. The first motion directed county staff to draft a formal ordinance for a data center moratorium, which will be brought back to the commission for a vote. The second motion enacted an immediate "zoning in progress" status for data centers, effectively freezing all current zoning and preventing any new applications.
Notably, the moratorium specifically excludes "Project Tango," a contentious data center development that is scheduled for a separate vote by the commissioners on the following Wednesday, July 15.
