
Georgia urged to adopt strict limits on data center thermal pollution

David Kyler, from the Center for a Sustainable Coast in St. Simons Island, Georgia, submitted a letter to the editor of the Bryan County News, warning about the severe environmental and public health risks posed by data center thermal pollution.
Kyler highlights that data centers release massive amounts of waste heat, which can increase air temperature by up to 4°F and land-surface temperature by as much as 16°F. This thermal pollution intensifies 'heat-islands,' leading to increased energy consumption for air-conditioning and higher costs for consumers. Air-cooled data center systems, in particular, release exhaust that is significantly hotter than the surrounding air, degrading environmental quality for miles.
According to Kyler, this concentrated heat discharge also harms local wildlife habitats and migratory patterns. He notes that while capturing this exhaust for thermal energy networks is possible, higher costs currently restrict such options. Kyler emphasizes that this issue exacerbates existing climate change problems, citing CDC reports on a surge in heat-related deaths. He concludes by urging local governments and the Georgia General Assembly to adopt strict legal controls on the size, location, and overheating impacts of data centers to mitigate these well-substantiated risks to public health and the environment.
