In early August, Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued an order for a "comprehensive verification and audit" of all data centers planning to connect to the state's power grid, effectively halting the approval of new data center projects. This move prompted the Texas House to schedule a legislative hearing for August 19, marking the first such hearing since the audit was announced.

The House State Affairs Committee is set to receive invited and public testimony on a range of topics, including specific projects like the 765-kV plans for data centers near Cedar Creek, where EdgeConneX is developing one of 19 planned buildings. The audit mandates that proposed data centers provide detailed information on their electric and water usage, water resource impacts, mitigation strategies for community effects, tax incentives received, and ownership details.

ERCOT, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, is tasked with auditing between 250 and 300 large facility proposals, predominantly data centers. Chad Seely, ERCOT’s general counsel, stated that this process will take "several months" to evaluate approximately 200 gigawatts of potential demand, more than twice ERCOT's current record demand. The Data Center Coalition has expressed support for Governor Abbott's audit and standards, viewing it as a holistic approach to understanding data centers' community impact, water technology, and power deliverability as these loads integrate into the grid.
