The Elkhart City Council is considering a temporary moratorium on new data center developments to study their potential community impacts. The Elkhart City Council is moving forward with a proposed temporary moratorium on new data center developments. Council members unanimously advanced the measure, scheduling a special meeting for August 27th to hold second and third readings and hear public comments on the proposal.

Council President Arvis Dawson stated the temporary pause would allow the city to thoroughly study the potential impacts of data centers and battery storage facilities on the community. City officials plan to investigate concerns such as electrical capacity, water usage, public safety, traffic, noise, and overall environmental effects. They also intend to visit other communities with existing data centers to learn from their experiences.

The moratorium is not intended as a permanent ban but rather as a temporary measure to halt new applications while the city develops comprehensive standards for future data center projects. A final vote on the temporary moratorium is anticipated during the August 27th meeting.
