Indiana Governor Braun and Eli Lilly are collaborating to explore nuclear energy solutions, including small modular reactors, to power data centers and other large-scale operations across the state. This partnership aims to address concerns about power grid strain and water usage, with calls to avoid imposing moratoriums on data center development. The initiative seeks to balance growth with responsible resource stewardship by encouraging businesses to generate their own power.

Gov: Indiana Governor
Indiana Governor Braun has signed a letter of intent with Eli Lilly to collaboratively pursue nuclear energy solutions, including small modular reactors (SMRs) and other advanced nuclear technologies, to power data centers and large-scale industrial operations across Indiana. This partnership aims to proactively address the significant power demands associated with such facilities.
Radio host Tony Katz of WIBC 93.1 FM voiced strong support for this approach, arguing that while legitimate concerns exist regarding power and water usage, the "radicalness against data centers is silly and nonsensical." Katz highlighted that many modern data center cooling systems are closed-loop, which mitigates environmental impact from water consumption. He advocated for data centers to be mandated to generate their own power and contribute excess energy back to the grid, seeing this as a dual solution for grid stability and economic opportunity for the state.
The vision outlined for Indiana emphasizes balancing economic growth and development with responsible stewardship of resources. Katz concluded that the state should welcome businesses willing to invest in self-power generation and create new community opportunities, viewing this as a "winning argument" for Indiana's future.
