In Vicksburg, Mississippi, Amazon Web Services announced a $3 Billion investment to build a new data center in Warren County. This announcement has led to concerns from locals about rising energy costs for the community.
In response, major tech companies like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Meta, Oracle, xAI, and OpenAI gathered in Washington to sign the "Ratepayer Protection Pledge" - a commitment by tech firms to provide their own electricity supplies for their data centers, either from new power plants or expanded existing plants. The pledge also includes commitments to pay for upgrades to power delivery systems and enter special electricity rate agreements with utilities.
This comes as Entergy Mississippi announced a $1.2 Billion investment to build a new 754-megawatt power plant in Vicksburg, which will help ensure reliable and affordable energy for the company's 459,000 customers across the state. The new plant will replace older natural gas generation facilities.
Local officials in Vicksburg are hoping these investments by both the tech companies and the utility will help attract more economic development opportunities to the area.
