City officials stated that their municipal code currently lacks specific definitions and regulations for data centers, leading to concerns about potential impacts on noise, air quality, infrastructure, and significant demands for electricity and water.
Mayor Kevin Lainez emphasized that the city's priority is the well-being of its residents, aiming to balance economic growth with quality of life. City Manager Ernie Hernandez added that the initiative reflects a commitment to proactive and responsible oversight of complex industrial proposals. The moratorium is intended to provide city staff with time to research data center operations and formulate proposed land-use standards, zoning amendments, and environmental safeguards. A written report detailing these measures is expected within 35 days, and a public hearing will be scheduled to consider extending the moratorium for up to an additional 10 months and 15 days.
