Ohio county hopes to keep electric bills lower amid data center boom
Eolian broke ground on the Flint Grid Battery Energy Storage System in Licking County, Ohio, near a cluster of data centers. This project aims to meet increased electricity demand driven by data center growth and help keep residents' electric bills lower. The first phase of the system is expected to be operational next year.
The rapid expansion of data centers in Ohio has significantly driven up electricity demand, contributing to higher electric bills for residents. To address this, Eolian has begun construction on the Flint Grid Battery Energy Storage System in Licking County, specifically in New Albany, where numerous data centers are located.
According to Eric Stoutenburg, Eolian's chief development officer, the system will store energy when it's inexpensive and abundant, then release it during peak demand periods. This strategy is expected to stabilize the regional power grid and help mitigate rising electricity costs for consumers, similar to how 15 gigawatts of battery storage have influenced prices in Texas. The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio reported that Columbus residential electricity bills are over 7% higher than last year.
Kwesi Low, deputy director of Columbus Stand Up, a local nonprofit, expressed hope that the project would provide relief to residents like himself who are struggling with increasing utility costs. While not opposing data centers, Low emphasized the desire for data center growth not to burden residents financially. The initial phase of the Flint Grid project is anticipated to be operational by the next year.
