Randolph County quorum court discusses data center possibilities
Randolph County Judge Ben Wicker told the quorum court that a prospective buyer has been seeking property in the area for a possible data center. Pocahontas residents expressed mixed views, citing potential jobs and technology benefits but also concerns about water use, energy demand, drought conditions and environmental impacts.
Randolph County Judge Ben Wicker brought the possibility of a data center development to the Randolph County Quorum Court after a prospective buyer reportedly contacted the county about land. No specific company or project site was identified, and the discussion focused on what development could mean for the community.
Pocahontas barber Michael McIntire said data centers could bring economic benefits as technology expands, but he questioned whether the county has sufficient water and energy resources. Pointing to drought conditions and low river levels, McIntire said he would oppose data centers if he had a vote. Another resident, Don McGuirt, also raised concerns, including whether jobs would primarily go to specialized workers from outside the area.
