Pallone Demands Answers from SpaceXAI About Its Data Center Threats to Tennessee & Mississippi Communities
Congressman Frank Pallone (D-NJ) is demanding answers from SpaceXAI regarding environmental and community threats posed by its Colossus 1 and Colossus 2 data centers in Tennessee and Mississippi. Pallone highlighted concerns over severe air pollution from gas-powered turbines operating without permits in Shelby County, TN, and an unnamed county in MS, along with impacts on the electric grid and public health. This action follows an unsatisfactory briefing from SpaceXAI staff, which Pallone claims shows disregard for local communities and a violation of the Clean Air Act.
Representative Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ), the top Democrat on the Energy and Commerce Committee, has sent a letter to SpaceXAI Founder and CEO Elon Musk, demanding answers regarding the environmental and community impacts of the company's Colossus 1 and Colossus 2 data centers in Tennessee and Mississippi. Pallone's letter comes amid increasing national concern over the rapid expansion of AI data centers and follows an "inadequate briefing" from SpaceXAI staff.
Pallone criticized SpaceXAI for its "disregard for the health and well-being of local communities" and the "rapid rollout of gas-powered turbines without adequate oversight or regulation," which he asserts creates a "massive health risk." He noted that the Colossus 1 data center in Shelby County, Tennessee, powered by 35 gas-powered turbines, is the third-largest source of ozone pollution in the county and operates without necessary air permits, in violation of the Clean Air Act.
Similarly, the Colossus 2 data center, located approximately five miles away across the Mississippi border, employs at least 60 gas-powered turbines also operating without permits. This site is reportedly the largest source of pollution in the Memphis area and the largest emitter of nitrogen oxide in the wider tri-state region. Pallone's letter also challenged the Trump Administration's alleged policy of granting tech companies "free rein to pollute unimpeded."
Given SpaceXAI's unresponsiveness in prior meetings, Pallone is requesting detailed information from the company and plans to schedule a visit for himself and Committee staff to both Colossus data center sites, including their energy generation facilities, to assess the need for federal guardrails.
