U.S. Representative Bruce Westerman (R-Hot Springs) recently visited South Arkansas to engage with local leaders regarding the region's lithium industry, the future of nuclear power, and developments within the South Arkansas University System. During his visit, Westerman, who chairs the House Committee on Natural Resources, emphasized the importance of refining and manufacturing lithium domestically rather than exporting raw materials, citing significant economic value lost in the initial stages of production. He advocated for state policies that incentivize local processing and disincentivize out-of-state shipping.

The Congressman also addressed the increasing demands of artificial intelligence, framing it as a national security issue in a "cold war with China" for AI development leadership. While acknowledging AI's potential for both beneficial and detrimental uses, Westerman asserted its inevitability. He also dispelled what he called misconceptions about modern data centers, stating that new hyperscale facilities are far more water-efficient than their predecessors, recirculating water rather than discharging it, making their water usage comparable to a golf course.

Furthermore, Westerman commented on a nuclear feasibility study that identified Camden as a potential site for a small modular reactor (SMR). He expressed confidence in the rapid acceleration of nuclear power, particularly with SMRs, which he described as safer due to their solid core cooling mechanisms using molten salts. While in Magnolia, Westerman met with SAU Chancellor Bruno Hicks to discuss plans for integrating and expanding SAU Tech's technical school programs with the university's degree offerings.
