Another data center proposal has emerged in Salisbury, North Carolina, on a 94-acre site, continuing the ongoing debates in Rowan County. This new project is separate from an earlier proposal that sparked protests and led to a county-wide moratorium, but falls within city limits. City officials are preparing to consider the conditional zoning approach for the development.

The conversation surrounding data centers in Rowan County, North Carolina, continues to intensify with a new proposal for a facility within the city limits of Salisbury. A developer is seeking to construct and operate a data center on a 94-acre plot of land on Henderson Grove Church Road. This latest proposal comes just days after a tense Rowan County Council meeting where residents protested a different potential data center located about 10 miles away. That earlier controversy led to the approval of a county-wide moratorium on data centers; however, the new Salisbury proposal is exempt as it sits within city limits. Public opinion on the new project is mixed. While some residents, like one interviewed by WCNC Charlotte's Walker Lawson, are not entirely opposed to the project's merits, concerns have been raised about the speed at which it is being advanced, urging more time for public engagement and understanding of the issue. The Salisbury Planning Board is scheduled to consider a tax amendment related to the project later this month, followed by consideration by the City Council in May. Should the City Council approve the conditional zoning approach, final approval could take an additional three to four months.
