Greensboro leaders weigh benefits, concerns as data center debate continues
Greensboro City Council recently voted against a proposed moratorium on data center projects, but city leaders are continuing to evaluate the benefits and concerns of future development. Meanwhile, Forsyth County commissioners are set to vote on a data center rezoning proposal next week, which has faced significant community opposition.
The debate over data centers is prominent in Greensboro, North Carolina, following a narrow 5-4 vote by the City Council against a proposed pause on data center projects. Despite this decision, city leaders, including the planning committee, held an informational session with a Virginia-based consulting firm to understand the economic risks and rewards of data center development.
The consultants highlighted potential financial benefits, citing Virginia counties that heavily funded public school systems through data center revenue. They recommended establishing clear guidelines and model ordinances for data centers. Council members, including Councilwoman April Parker, expressed significant concerns regarding water usage, particularly its impact on local reservoirs Lake Brant and Lake Jeannette, as well as wildlife and current water levels. Other worries included light and noise pollution, and increased demand on electricity.
The city manager indicated that more such informational sessions would be held. Separately, in Forsyth County, commissioners are scheduled to vote next Thursday on a rezoning proposal that could facilitate a data center project. This proposal has faced months of opposition from local residents.
