The Indio City Council is considering extending the citywide moratorium on new data center development for one year, through Oct. 16, 2027. The pause was prompted by concerns about water consumption, electrical demand, greenhouse gas emissions, noise and air quality while city staff develop permanent regulations.

The Indio City Council will consider a second and final extension of the city’s moratorium on establishing, expanding or intensifying data centers and similar high-intensity computing uses. The original 45-day pause was approved unanimously June 3 and later extended for 90 days, with the current moratorium scheduled to expire Oct. 16.

If approved by the required four-fifths vote, the extension would run through Oct. 16, 2027. City staff would use the additional year to draft amendments to Indio’s general plan, unified development code, zoning regulations and development standards, citing concerns over data center water use, electricity demand, emissions, noise and air quality.
