Lowell Township planners to consider Microsoft rezoning request
The Lowell Charter Township Planning Commission will discuss Microsoft's proposed zoning ordinance text amendment and conditional rezoning application, which seeks to add data centers as a permitted use in the Light Industrial District. The Township board recently voted 5-2 against a proposed six-month moratorium on data center discussions.
Microsoft has submitted a rezoning application to the Lowell Charter Township Planning Commission in Michigan. The company is seeking to amend the Township's zoning ordinance to permit data centers within the LI
– Light Industrial District and is requesting conditional rezoning for several parcels. This involves a potential data center project at the Covenant Business Park, although Microsoft does not currently own the property. The Planning Commission is scheduled to discuss this request, but Microsoft will not be fielding questions from the public at the meeting.
Separately, the Lowell Township board recently considered a proposed six-month moratorium on data center discussions. After two readings and subsequent deliberation, the board voted 5-2 against enacting the moratorium, effectively rejecting a temporary halt on such discussions. If the Planning Commission approves Microsoft's rezoning changes, the project would still proceed through standard review procedures, public engagement, and regulatory requirements before any final decisions are made.
