Butler County Commission tables decision on data center regulations
The Butler County Commission in Kansas unanimously delayed a decision on proposed regulations for data centers in unincorporated areas until Oct. 27. The draft rules address siting, noise, water use, environmental protection and other requirements, while residents raised concerns about groundwater, livestock and emergency response.
The Butler County Commission unanimously tabled action on proposed data center regulations after more than two hours of commissioner discussion and public testimony. The decision was moved to Oct. 27 to allow further review and possible revisions to rules governing data center locations and operating standards in unincorporated Butler County.
The proposal includes requirements related to noise, lighting, water-use feasibility, traffic, environmental protection, emergency response, utility coordination and facility decommissioning. Eighteen residents spoke, with many urging caution or opposing development because of potential groundwater depletion, livestock impacts and limited emergency response capacity. Some also called for a moratorium or larger exclusion zones tied to the Flint Hills ecoregion and the county comprehensive plan.
