Rep. Tucker Co-Sponsors Bill Eliminating the Sales and Use Tax Exemptions for Data Centers
Wisconsin Rep. Duke Tucker is co-sponsoring legislation to eliminate sales and use tax exemptions for data center construction and operations created by 2023 Wisconsin Act 19. Tucker cited concerns about data centers’ effects on electricity rates, water usage and local taxpayers, and said communities should retain control over whether to allow them.
Wisconsin Assemblyman Duke Tucker announced that he will co-sponsor legislation repealing the sales and use tax exemptions available for qualified data center property and equipment under 2023 Wisconsin Act 19. Tucker said data centers should be subject to local approval and should provide tax benefits to the communities hosting them.
Tucker also pointed to estimates from the Wisconsin Legislative Fiscal Bureau that the exemptions could save developers more than $1.5 billion during construction and $369 million annually after projects are completed. He cited concerns about electrical-grid impacts, water usage and rising utility rates, noting that some communities are considering data center moratoriums.
